You could have some sort of survey in the next AF- just a little voting slip

one of the pages saying "I would/ would not buy a non- DD AF (please
delete)" or something.

Arrgh!! Does this mean that different Rev2B's work differently? I have
had no timing problems on mine using classic squirrel with the standard
'020 and then with an 030/50 and now with an 040/25, squirrel doesn't
miss a beat.
So my 2B works fine and yours doesn't. Seems that supposedly identical
motherboards, aren't. Ho-hum.:-(

They are now being manufactured by DCE (who have had the licence to do so
since July 99). DCE also has manufacturing rights to all the pre-G4 PPC
stuff, the CyberVision 64-3D, and a whole load of 030, 040 and 060 cards for
the entire Amiga range.

The guys at DCE are doing their best to get all these cards back into
production, but at present DCE do not have enough production capability to
manufacturer all the P5 stuff + their other projects simultaneously.
Therefore, they have to do a lot of stuff in rotation, hence the delays in
getting stock on some items to the likes of Power.

You'd think that wouldn't you. The A1200 is easily the most temperamental
computer ever made. You could probably ask 100 different owners with that

They are very good. The 1012 is only 12-bit, while the 516 is 16-bit but has
fewer channels, but Sunrize closed down about three years ago.

Randomize have some in stock, which is why I asked here.  Does anyone know
more about them, such as if they're Zorro cards, and if they're supported
by AHI, and how much they're worth, and if I should get one?

BTW Ben, do you have a projected release date for the Repulse sound card?
I've emailed Alien Design for more details but have yet to recieve a reply!
 I don't suppose you have some advance knowledge of it perchance?

Kev, wanting a zorro sound card for his miggy, damn it!

PS Anyone here selling a ConciertoIV?  Please?  There's none on AmiBench ...  :(

I have ordered many a time from SHAC; normally it doesn't take too
long.  But if what you are saying is the distorted truth :) (rather
than some mumbo jumbo :) then there's still a chance some postie has
not lost it, or delivered it to the wrong place.

Well I have bought my copy of AF today and I am as well as others are,
very pleased with the standard; getting better all the time.  Well
Done! :)  I am also looking forward to having a play with Fusion
tonight (if my past is anything to go by it'll be a knightmare - A4K
floppy, Tower conversion, ateo bus, shapeshifter and all the other
sagas... :) which should be pretty cool.  I wonder if the WBench window
driver is any better than WinnerEVD on ShapeShifter (the 1bit window is
very fast; but the 4bit and 8bit is still usable on my 040/40 gfx. card
amiga...) and if there is any reall speedups... :)

As for PCx, got that already, though curiously i don't have the
T-Shirt..  Plug alert: Check Af125 for how to get Windows 3.11 for
Workgroups running on PCx... :)  And another plug: PC-Task is much
faster, my research shows that an 040/40 on PCx pulls off a respectable
12MHz 80386DX at best, with performance usually lingering at around
8MHz' '386 'speed' (not that an 8MHz '386 existed!), however PC-Task is
quite remarkable, performance can start at 12MHz '386 speed, but at
best can even get 33MHz '386DX speed.  Note that the latter speed is
when a previously translated chunk of code has been called soon after;
so to speak.  I won't go into why the speed varies, unless those who
don't know why want to know... :)

BTW: The Windows '98 shot on the CD cover is a tad misleading me
thinks... :)

While I'm on emulation; realising that sometimes 2-4 sides of paper
cannot always do justice to a product; in AF104 iirc, when you reviewed
Fusion 2.0; you did a mammoth review; which was extremely good, in
depth and an excellent resource i turn to when I need a tid bit of info
regarding Mac emulation.  SO in view of the fact that fewer software
products are released, perhaps when Fusion PPC and PCx PPC are release,
you could do massive reviews of them; depsite the size of AF nowadays.
:)

Shame the 3.1 ROM installation doesn't cover peeps like me who have
their 1200s in towers; i'm NOT looking forward to having to gut the
whole tower completely... :)))

Overall a very good issue IMO; well done, and keep up the good work;
let's make the most of the time that you do have left! :))  Also if you
want to fit more in the magazine; you could always drop the size of
body text down 1pt, then you'll fit more in :).

/me is still worried about the cheque... :/

Perhaps live chat or IRC can excuse the poor english used on the net, but I
usually read through what I've written before hitting send - that usually
clears up misspellings and grammatical errors, not to mention giving you
the time to calm down and take out all those insulting phrases. Others on
this list could benefit from doing the same.

That would probbaly include me! :)  I kid you not, but my written
english ie: non-e-mails is a lot better than my grammar and spelling in
my E-Mails; i think the thing is that E-Mail is so much more immediate;
a lot less formal.  At least there's one thing that I am quite good
with is my apostrophes! :)  I actaully bother to use them, and yes, i
do know how they work... :))

However, my IRC typing is a different kettle of fish; if you can
decipher what i spew forth then that person is a better man than I! :)
Take a simple sentence:

Hello, how are all of you today?

In mt IRC skills it normally ends up looking like:\

Hwello, ho aer alll o yooui todfsy>?

:)  Nuff said me thinks!  Neil Bullock will confirm this.. :)  The
problem is that you need to type faaaaaast... :)

You can still pre-order G4 cards, and that would be the price you'd pay
(if you pre-ordered). Given the low production volume of PPC cards by
DCE you'd probably have to wait as long for whichever one you ordered,
if you ordered one tomorrow.

Just noticed something in the latest AF, me just being finicky, but why
in the ROM upgrade feature, are you upgrading and Amiga Technology's
A1200 to KS3.1? :)

Surely all AT A1200s have 3.1 ROMs already; or has this A1200 got 3.0
ROMs for some obscure reason?  Or are the chips already 3.1 ROMs
anyway! :)

How do I know it's an AT A1200, check the small logo on the top
lefthand side, nope no Commodore logo, just the new Amiga logo... :)

They are Zorro-based, I'm not sure about AHI support, they originally sol=

That machine was actually a KS3.0 machine, and if you look, the KS3.1 ROMS
are the ones we bought from Eyetech.

But it's possible that he has the boot ROM disabled due to
incompatibilities with 060 processors.  By using the OktaPussy software I
pointed out, it'd get around this, although he won't be able to boot a hard
drive from the card.

However, IIRC the Oktagon also calls the device "2nd.scsi.device" so he
might be able to access it that way.  I used to use an Oktagon (and wish
I'd kept it - I thought the GVP 4008 was meant to be better ): and it
worked fine with MakeCD and my Yamaha CD writer.

According to the BBOAHW they don't support AHI=2E  However, =A3400 and =A36=

me. Then it worked.

It isn't Courier, if you look closely. It's actually a family called
Rockwell that we chose. It scales well and has plenty of weights available
to make it a more complete family.

Unfortunately, I think it would be right to say that Amiga users on the net
would have generally higher spec machines than those who are not. So if you
were to ask afb how many would buy the CD issue, more would say "yes" than
if the poll was via the mag itself, and snail mail, IMHO.

On the subject of dropping the DD issue, how many people do buy the mag
purely for the disks? True, the AFCD is a great source of stuff, but the
DDs surely cannot be the main reason for buying AF. I reckon that if the DD
issue was dropped, you'd lose fewer readers than you'd think.

But of course, that won't happen soon...

No, that's not what I mean. I mean that the 980 members of this list now
form a significant proportion of all AF readers.

No, I don't think we would. I think that as soon as we drop DD support, we'd
also lose all those readers who couldn't afford, or couldn't be bothered to
get themselves a CD-ROM drive, which would pretty much be all of them...

Hmm, well I've put 3.1 in it now, and got an IDE cd-rom, its running an 0=
30/25 and 8 megs fast and seems okay so far.

What exactly is this fix? As I mentioned before this mobo has some resist=

so does this mean that phase5 are gonna still make the G4s? are they
ever gonna make anything anymore, or is this really the end of the
amiga, because phase5 has really carried us along on the hardware side
for many years, such as giving us the PPCs and now without them, does
this really mean no more good hardware? also, is it true that the 603es
are limited in number, becuase several times i've heard most companies
don't have them in stock?
does anybody know how to mount a network drive using SMB using a proper
filesystem? i can do it for NFS, but not SMB.

list, so that anyone can send an email to the list (without been subscribed

So what about people like me who are dyslexic, I have to guess at most
spellings as I dont know (you probably dont notice), but not everyone who
uses the internet has a good level of english.

For example, I always have problems spelling wednesday ( I tend to spell it
wensday)

Not everyone spells badly because they are lazy, it could be other reasons
as well, eg, been dyslexic, or english not been a first language.

Hi,

 I have finally decided to get a CDRW to backup my HD with. I
originally intended to get a 4416 but I cannot find anyone who stocks
the basic SCSI model. AFAIK the 8424 has a Ultra SCSI interface. I want
to attach this to my Blizzard 603e+ via it`s SCSI-2 Interface.

 However I am having difficulty scourcing appropriate cabling. I have
found a "DB68M/50 PIN HEADER IDC INTERNAL SCSI ADAPTER" and
"M68PIN-F50PIN INT SCSI AD" at Jungle and I think I have seen 68 - 50
converters. Will this work bearing in mind that I want to add a HD and
possibly a CD-ROM afterwards and dont want to buy more expensive
cabling.

 As well as cabling I am unsure about termination. The Blizzard manual
says that the card itself is terminated so only one other active
terminatior is required. However I have heard people say that the card
is not terminated. Which is the case ? What should I get / try.

We discussed this a while back, but the members of the list decided that
they preferred the convenience of not having a closed list. Now that you
can have aliases for your email addresses, I wonder if that's still valid?
Also, since I don't have a policy of moderating subscriptions, any spammer
can simply join afb and post - they never get more than one through, since
the managers of this list swiftly remove their ability to post while
ensuring that the offending spammer gets all the mail from the list in the
least concise manner possible (change to html and every mail, rather than a
digest).

I sympathise, but it doesn't alter the fact that with a bit of care (and a
dictionary!) the standard of spelling on here couldn't be better.

The fixed resistors should be near the video port (dunno if they're cut
or added, though) and there should also be a wire soldered to the board
near the PCMCIA slot.
There's a web page somewhere with the specifics on it, but I cant
remember which. There's prolly also a doc file on aminet about it, but
I'm not sure which it is (I think its

Well I now have the writer on my CS-PPC card, and it's written out a
partition back up from image file at 4x fine.  However, I couldn't (as I
thought at first) create an audio CD from mp3 files directly - I got a
buffer under-run, although I'm not sure if I've got the PPC mpega libs
correctly set up.

Next step, try out an audio cd and make sure there is no background noise
:-)

I have been able to test my Micronik keyboard on a PC, and it seems to wo=

okay there, so I'm assuming that it is a fully functional PS/2 keyboard.
Which is the best adaptor to go for, considering that I only need PC
keyboard support, multiple keypresses, and I'm hard pushed to find =A320
after the recent spending spree?

If he want to boot from the card I recommend that he gets the new
Oktapussy ROM
chip. I recently bought mine from Vesalia http://www.vesalia.de and it
works fine.

Yup, the Oktapussy driver uses 2nd.scsi.device instead of
oktagon.device. And
yes, the combination Oktagon/MakeCD works great! Although IIRC you
should
choose SoftSCSI_OktagonC9XXX.device (use Sysinfo or similar prog to get
the correct
device name) instead of 2nd.blabla in MakeCD's device chooser.
